Unlink Google photos from iCloud

I’m amazed that this isn’t a clear setting while most of us take tons of pictures until we get the one we want- then go on to delete the others. Because iCloud keeps them all when I try to make a Google album it pulls up the screen showing ALL photos even the ones I deleted! Bc of the small screen it’s hard to see what ones I actually wanted. Is there a way to disconnect Google photos from using iCloud? And just have Google connected to my iPhones camera roll? Thank you in advance!!
