Laptop using a lot of ram

So my laptop an omen 17 is constantly maxing out on ram usage slowing down my gaming and such the problem is it does this with nothing open on screen so my background programs alone are using 50-80% of my max ram does anyone have any suggestions on how to lower the ram usage or should I just get more ram (I currently only have 8gb ram)
