Adsl speeds & distance from exchange

We've got very slow adsl speeds, around 6 to 7mbps, and I need to check this more throughly but I think we're around a kilometer from the exchange / cabinet. I think it's likely due to the age of the copper lines in the area, is there anything anyone could suggest to try get any better speeds at all? Any sort of filtering or something or anything technical I could ask the lines company to check or adjust (unlikely they'd actually replace the buried phone line itself though). Any suggestions appreciated, thanks very much!
