External HDD Dying - Ideas to Save Files

Post Body

I have a WD 500 GB external HD, which has been working for about 5 - 6 years. Last night while playing a newly added file, it stopped playing the file midway on my nvidia shield. I could restart from the beginning and the file would fail exactly at the same marker. Other files seemed to play fine.

I moved the file back to my PC and the same thing happened over there. Deleted the file and then I couldnt even delete it from the Trash, with an error saying I don't have the priveleges. Luckily a reboot fixed that. Soon after Windows started reporting that the disk had errors and needed a scan and then explorer started freezing with the drive plugged in.

I dont hear any sound but I suspect the drive is starting to fail. Any ideas on how I can recover the files from the drive?
