Paused music plays by itself when putting my iphone XR into sleep mode by pressing the side button?

So it’s a simple problem really. I’ll be playing music and want to pause it for whatever reason when turning my phone to sleep mode by pressing the side button. Unlike any other phone I’ve had, the music I’ve been playing from Spotify automatically resumes playing when I put my iphone XR in sleep mode by pressing the side button. This has been a recent development that just started occurring in the past month. Before that, didn’t have a problem with it.
