After potential water damage, PC takes between seconds and hours to post, and works perfectly fine after it does. 'Time to Post' is proportional to how much data moved around on the computer last time it was running.

Hey r/techsupport!

A few years back, I built a PC for gaming which has since turned in my photography rig specs here.

It has performed admirably, but last year it got a fine misting from an unexpected rainstorm and an open window nearby. Ever since, it has been exhibiting some crazy boot up behavior.

In short: if I press the power button, all the fans turn on, case lights light up, etc, but the thing rarely posts immediately. Meaning that no signal is sent out to the monitor (don't get the Asus screen from the Mobo). After a period of time, it posts just fine, Asus shows up on the screen, everything boots, and then the whole thing sings like it always has, no performance issues whatsoever. This delay can be a few seconds to as much as 12 hours.

It seems to be tied reliably to how much data I have recently moved around. If I just logged in to print something off, the subsequent boot up is rapid. If I upload 30 GB of photos, process them, move them to an external harddrive and backup, I have to turn it on before I leave for work if I want access to it again that evening.

I have no idea what's up with it at this point. It is 4 years old now, so I suppose I could just build a new rig. But that does seem like a bit of a waste, since it runs so well when it actually... runs.

Any thoughts on where I could go about hunting this issue down?

Cheers!
