My 60 year old dad just bought a new laptop. How do I explain to him how viruses and malware work and how to avoid them?

Post Body

My dad just bought this laptop and I'm helping him "set it up" next week by installing google chrome, open office, ad block plus and ccleaner (also showing him how to use this).

However, he is insistent that he needs to buy internet security software such as Webroot or Trend Micro. I'm not super well-versed in tech stuff but it's been my experience these programs are just junky pieces of crap that do more to slow down your computer than actually help. I'm competent in browsing the internet and ccleaner and adblock are enough for me to avoid any malware on my computer, but I know my dad is not.

Basically, I'm asking for recommendations for software I can put on his laptop that will make him feel better OR how to explain to him why he doesn't need it and how to browse competently and safely so he doesn't destroy his new laptop.

Thanks!!
