SMTP response from IMAP telnet

Hi folks,

So I don't know much about Exchange, but something tells me this is off. When I telnet to a mail server over port 143, I get this response:

220 [server] Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service ready at Thu, 5 Mar
2015 15:50:13 -0800

It seems to me I should receive this:

* OK The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service is ready.

Is this expected behavior? And what could cause this SMTP response over what I believe is an IMAP port?
