I just put together a new PC for use as a HTPC and storage box. Here's the full parts list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Viper007Bond/saved/xwP9TW
The RAM is old as heck and from a previous build, but everything else is brand new.
However the integrated Intel GPU apparently keeps crashing on me, seemingly when I touch the Intel graphics stuff. It seems to freeze if I open up it's control panel or run Windows Update. The screen freaks out and numlock and such are unresponsive (so not just the screen).
Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/f5wtRgr.jpg It's flickering left/right.
Things I've tried so far:
- Fresh install of Windows 8.1 and then installing Intel drivers via Windows Update. Locks up and freezes at some point during this.
- Fresh install of Windows 8.1 and then installing newer Intel drivers from Intel's website. Works fine until I open it's control panel and click one of the buttons. Also freezes during Windows Update installing even though drivers are already installed, so maybe it's not the Intel drivers.
- Using DisplayPort instead of HDMI. Still happens.
- Updating BIOS to make sure it supports this latest generation CPU. Did this before I even installed Windows for the first time.
- Making sure I didn't fuck up the HSF install by checking the CPU temp in BIOS (~35C). It does complain about a low CPU fan speed but I can see it turning.
- Run memtest86 non-plus and it reports no errors.
- Pulling my hair out. It didn't help.
Is there something else I can try? Do I have a bad CPU? I'm comfortable and willing to do any troubleshooting you can suggest.
One thing I noticed on the PCPartsPicker website is this warning:
The Corsair XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory operating voltage of 1.65V exceeds the Intel Haswell Refresh CPU recommended maximum of 1.5V 5% (1.575V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.5V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum.
Perhaps I should get new RAM but I wouldn't think this is related to my issue.
