Overseas cellphone use.

Hi guys, I'm off to America (NZ to USA) in October for 6 months. I just have a question about using my cellphone over there.
I was told that I would be fine using it overseas as long as the carrier network was on the the same bandwidth as my home network.
I'm on Telecom/Spark NZ, which is has a bandwidth of 850MHZ
What carriers in USA am I able to use?
