Using a laptop as a 2nd monitor?

I use my main desktop PC for a majority of the day however I have always wanted a 2nd monitor however I have never had the money to get one. That's when I realised that I might be able to use my laptop as a monitor. I tried it using Miracast but as I often us my PC for gaming having it on WiFi isn't really an option for me.
Does anyone know anyway to turn a laptop (Surface 8 pro in specific) into a 2nd monitor for a Windows PC without using Miracast or relying on the main PC needing WiFi
