My Macbook wont play sounds on the internet-- any website... youtube, you name it.

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro w lion. I have checked the volume on my computer as well as the volume for the song etc. on the internet, and both have been fully up. My iTunes, however, does play music and all other applications are good to go as well. What is wrong? Is this a big problem, and what can I do to fix it?
