Hey guys I have a now 14 year old TDI beetle (1.9L) and about six months ago our family friend/neighbor/VW mechanic did some work on it and found the turbo was on its way out of this world. A couple months ago I had the carbon build up cleaned out from the engine and it ran better than when I got the car two years ago.

Recently, however, I have noticed the power dropping steadily and only getting real pull when I get up to about 3500 rpm.

Am I most likely looking at having to replace the turbo, or is it possible to have the turbo fixed? If replacement is the only way to go, can the engine handle a bigger turbo than what comes stock?
