Is the novel worth reading?

So I just caught up to the comic yesterday and I felt completely empty, I couldn’t wait for another week for just a single new chapter. So I was thinking of giving the novel a try, but I heard quite a few bad things about how the novel goes downhill from the school arc onwards or something. Is it worth reading? And how much does a single chapter take to read?
