Tax Treatment of Lawsuit Proceeds
Post Body

I am helping someone with filing their 2016 tax return. They received for this year a 1099 Misc with a large amount in box 3. They said it was for a discrimination lawsuit they filed toward a hospital while they were pregnant. From what I can tell online, there are some kinds of settlements that are not taxable, but I do not know if this is the case. I spoke to a tax professional and they said I should talk to the attorney, but we can’t reach him. Is this taxable? If not, what should we do about the 1099?
