Tax Return Question - Registered dependent of parents, paying for my own college apartment, with out of state paid internship
Post Body

So, this is the exact same boat I was in last year, but I don’t think I got the correct amount back on my refund last time, so I want to make sure I am filing everything correctly this time.

I am a college student living in Indiana. I am still a reported dependent of my parents on their tax return, and their name is on the tuition bill, insurance, and car.

I pay all of my own rent and day to day living expenses, my name only is on the lease for my college apartment.

Question 1: Is my listed primary address supposed to be my college apartment that I pay for (and also do report that I rent an apartment as my primary residence, since I live there the majority of the year), or do I list my address as my parent’s house/home address since I am still a dependent, even though I’m not living there?

Additionally, for about 30 weeks of 2018, I was working at a paid internship in Illinois. 13 weeks in the spring, and 17 in the Fall. Both times I was renting a spare room from someone, in the spring I was living in Illinois, in the fall I was living in Indiana. It wasn’t through a company or on an official lease either time. Both times I was away, I was also continuing to pay rent on my college apartment.

Question 2: How exactly do I report that? I didn’t have a registered address for Illinois in the spring, but I was still living there for the duration of the work session. And for both spring and fall, is there a way I am supposed to report I was paying rent on two properties at once?
