Hi folks, got a query because I'm not too well-versed in tattoo etiquette and my social skills are sub-par at best lol.

I'm really keen to get a tattoo designed and inked from an anime that I love. I've found a great artist who specialises in cartoon tatts and I'd like to ask if he's familiar with the show because I feel like I'll get the best result if the artist knows the characters? Like exactly how to draw their expressions, and the general vibe of the design. Am I being too pedantic with this preference?

If it's a valid preference, how can I word it politely? So far everything I've come up with sounds condescending, like "hey, have you seen this show? Because I'm concerned that you won't do it justice despite how well you can draw" lol gross.
