My version of Strength was created digitally using GIMP. It uses the rainbow crosswalk to represent hope, beauty, and joy as well as the original LGBTQ flag. The sun represents warmth, vitality, yang/solar female. The act of protesting represents courage, perseverance, and how inner strength arises when we most need it. When I was thinking about what location and people would represent Strength, no event seemed more poignant than the Stonewall Riots. The people in the card are Marsha P. Johnson (left) and Sylvia Rivera (right) who have become some of the most iconic figures associated with that night.
From what I read, they both arrived later in the night after the riots had already started. However, today Sylvia's desire to be known as the person to "throw the second bottle" at Stonewall has definitely been honored. We don't actually know who started the riots specifically, but Marsha and Sylvia have risen to a fame and association with the event beyond their actual participation probably due to their status in the community. So, that's why I chose them.
