So I am working on Nether Portals and trying to connect them with the over world. I know the conversion is ever 1 block in the nether is 8. However the stuff I have been reading says that if you make a portal go through it and then go back through it you won't end up where you went through at. I thought that if you made a nether portal in the over world it automatically connected to the Nether in the right spot no matter what. Can some one help me figure this out. The place I want to connect to go to in the over world is over 2000 blocks away in the over world.
Also can't wait for Bukkit to update I am missing Tarnation so badly.
To be honest, what you are describing has been happening with Nether portals for as long as I can remember. You're right that it is a 8:1 ratio of moving, but Minecraft has to 'safely' place the portal, or most times you would end up in lava. The portal location is calculated every time you enter. The closer that the 'safe' location is to the original location before the 'safe' calculation, the more likely you are to step into the same portal locations.
There was a time in Minecraft when stepping through a portal had foregone the check for an existing portal and would only create new ones at 'safe' locations. It was a mess. My guess is that it's never been fully fixed, and we still wait for a perfect fix from jeb.
