Hi, I'm Tom from a group called Trash Fishing. I'm like the guy from River Monsters except instead of big fish, my son and I go around looking to remove trash from our waterways. We are based in Detroit, but this Sunday I'll be in the Tampa/St. Pete area and I'd like to go fishing for trash. The problem is that I don't know where to find the trashiest spots. Maybe I can share my experiences with you and then you can share your knowledge of the area.
- I'll be on a boat. That means I have access to any shoreline at all, even islands and such.
- We measure our success by how many pounds of plastic/litter we recover, so I'm most interested in ghost nets, ropes, barrels, and places where large things wash ashore.
- I'm starting in St. Petersburg and I have 1/2 day, so I won't be able to reach the Eastern part of the bay.
- Typically, uninhabited, sandy-shores, that have a lot of water flowing by are the best places for debris to collect.
Recently, I was in Houston/Galveston and I had great success on an island where no one lived. The Island was near the exit of Galveston bay and It had a sandy shore which sorta filters out the big floating trash and I could beach the boat. In a day I recovered 900 lbs. of trash there. I'm hoping someone on Reddit knows of such a place in your area.
Edit: We will be launching from Tierra Shores at 1:00PM on Sunday. There is a Facebook event for it, but you'll need a boat to join us. https://www.facebook.com/events/620747581805991/
