Hello all, this is my first time posting and I've held onto this gem for a long, long time and felt I needed to share it. Some background, at the time I was a technician for a school district, where I've now moved on to becoming the Director of Technology.
At the time of this post, we had just started buying iMacs. The iMacs in question were the old brightly colored ones with CRTs, and had a tray-loading optical drive. The person needing help was a principal for our middle school, and she was really well known in the district for wearing this white pants suit ... thing. And for always being incredibly angry about everything. She was the type of person I tried to avoid until the job demanded confrontation.
So to declare:
$cmm = Classical Music Monger (me);
$awps = Angry White Pants Suit;
$phb = PHB;
The setup:
A few days prior to this, we had just delivered this brand-new iMac. It was beautiful: it had a hockey puck for a mouse, had this crazy USB thing (which was awesome before we realized it always took us three tries to ever insert a cord into a port... who knew?!), made satisfying buzz as the CRT powered up, and gave that tell-tale Mac chime. Mmmmm breathe that in. Yeah I hated them.
This principal had just moved off of using some old monstrosity of a Mac with the typical yellowing beige that from all my years of watching House, I'm pretty sure it was going into renal failure, but at least it wasn't lupus. Of course the principal hated her old Mac up until we were taking it away, and then it was her beloved. She saw this bright blue iMac and must have been blinded by it's ever-cheerful complexion and realized it was taunting her with glee in a world she only knew as having only anger with a side of rabies.
<$awps calls $phb>
$phb: "Hello, this is $phb, what can I--"
$awps: "$cmm STOLE MY CDs!!!"
$phb: "Wait, he stole your CDs? What kind of CDs?"
$awps: "MY MUSIC!"
$phb <to $cmm>: "Did you take any CDs from $awps?"
$cmm: "Uhhhh let me make sure I didn't pick up anything on accident when I left, but no I don't believe so... what were they?"
$phb <to $awps>: "What kind of--"
$awps: "THEY WERE CLASSICAL MUSIC!"
$phb: "$cmm doesn't know where your CDs are, but I'm going to have him check around and maybe stop by to see what could have happened. They may have been accidentally boxed up during setup of your new iMac."
$awps: "Whatever. Just make sure I get these back, I don't appreciate being stolen from and he's the only one who could have taken them."
<$cmm drives over to $awps' building)
$cmm: "Okay, so let me take a look around--"
$awps: "Listen. LISTEN TO ME. I know you took these from me, and I know you're just going to put them out in the open and try to make me look a fool, so I'm going to be watching you. Closely. Don't pull anything."
$cmm: <gulps> "Okay well let me just... look around. When did you last see them?"
$awps: "This morning. I put them in the music player..."
$cmm: "The CD drive, here?" points at drive
$awps: <nods> "Yes, of course."
$cmm: <opens CD tray, looks in drive> "Okay I don't see them here but.....wait, hold on."
$awps: <glares at $cmm> "Wait, don't you just put them--"
$cmm: <cannot contain laughter> "I'm truly sorry, but I just have to laugh right now, this hasn't ever happened for me before but.... Okay you know how these drives in these iMacs are a tray? See that center spindle? It requires you to snap the disc down into the tray. I think when you were closing the tray--"
$awps: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN SNAP IT DOWN? NO ONE TOLD ME THIS!"
$cmm: "It's okay, you're right, no one told you about this, I assure you and I'm sorry. See right in here?" <points at area through translucent case of computer, right above optical drive tray> "It looks like when you closed this, it forced the disc up above the drive. You have about...hmmm... 4? 5? More...? Just sitting right there."
$awps: <backs down from seething and foaming to just playfully manslaughter-ready> "I just.... so wait, they were just sitting right there? Inside?"
$cmm: <still laughing> "Yeah, let me just grab a screwdriver and get this thing taken apart and get these back to you...."
Yes, she somehow managed to forcefully load not just 2, 3, or 4 CDs, but 5 INTO her computer through a small space between her CD and the chassis of her computer. I still cannot get past how she immediately assumed that we (or more specifically, I) had stolen them from her. I don't even know how I kept it together for as long as I did, and even that wasn't for very long. Luckily, she was only there for a couple more years, taking her white pants suit with her.
Edit: Changed "slot-loading" to "tray-loading". Whoops.
