Heya Gang! If you remember back to Chapter 2 you already know that this Dev is tops. Well, on Tuesday, he proved why he is A#1 Okie Dokie Dev.
Dev lurking over my desk like death
Dev: "Hey, YankeeNinja. I have a problem."
Me: "I gathered. What happened this time?"
Dev: "I cant boot into Windows again."
I walk over and take a look. I can't get the machine to boot into Safe Mode without getting a keyboard error. Never had that happen before. Anyway, I decide to open the computer up and notice that the cables aren't firmly connected to the hard drive. Easy fix!
Me: "Ok, I figured it out, and you should be good."
Dev: "Ummmm...well, there's another problem. I MAY have downloaded a virus. I'm not sure."
I log in as the local admin and sure as shit, there's a bogus tech support LogMeIn dialogue with a phone number to call and a password prompt. FUCK!
Me: "You sure did download a virus. I have to re-image your machine. Your data cannot be recovered as it poses a risk to the security of the network."
Dev: "Wait, what? Why cant you recover my data?"
Me: "You have a serious virus on your machine that, due to you having admin rights on your machine, poses a serious threat to the network both desk side and server side. You connect to database servers and now pose a risk to the security of those servers where all of our members' demographic information lies. This is a HIPAA security issue. I have to revoke your admin rights and insure the network is secure."
Dev: "Don't start with me. Just get my machine back up and running."
Me: "Don't start with you? OK, let's go talk to the CIO and let him know that you carelessly downloaded a bullshit program and now have a very serious virus on your machine and are arguing with me over network security and best practices."
Dev: "Ok, ok, ok, I'm sorry. Can you please just get my computer working again?"
Me: "I have to speak with the CIO and notify him of the security concerns and let him advise me on how to proceed."
CIO wasn't around so Manager Mangler said scanning with a malware removal tool and our AV product would suffice. Needless to say, there were over 100 instances of malware, spyware, trojans, and other baddies that the scans revealed. His data, however, remained intact.
UPDATE #1 - Manager Mangler told me "as long as he has antivirus on his machine, we're protected" and "since he does, there's no reason to wipe his machine."
UPDATE #2 - The Dev just came and grabbed me to tell me that random programs are now being installed on his machine. I can't wait to gleefully tell him I'm nuking his data.
UPDATE #3 - 4/11-4/12 - Welp, CIO was gone for the day after I posted it, Mangler was out getting drunk, and no one could give me any sort of direction. So, I ran another malware scan and let it cook overnight. Came back with over 100 instances of Malware. CIO was in yesterday, but, since he has no technical knowledge, was umming and ohing to everything I said and, basically, decided to order the Dev a new machine. As it pertains to his data, CIO agrees with me that it poses a security risk to the network, but is waiting for the end-all-be-all of technology (Mangler) to agree, but since Mangler thinks AV is enough to do the job, you probably already know where this is going.
TL;DR - This dev is a moron, downloaded a bogus program, infected his machine with a serious virus and had the balls to argue with me over network security because i had to revoke his admin rights, but I am the bad guy. SMH
