So, thought I'd share this from a few weeks ago. My wife's water broke and we rushed to the hospital at 2 AM. The staff here is amazing and I can't say anything bad about them. It's just obvious computers aren't their schtick. So we're in L&D and we're not it active labor, (turns out that's 2 days away), but we're getting monitored and what not. The nurse is having a hell of a time with the computer, three monitors and a mouse that isn't moving to two of them.
Wife: My husband can help with that, he works for $BigWellKnownCompany.
Uh oh. 1 hour of sleep and I'm being asked to diagnose a hosptial computer system I have no idea what they're setup is. It's just a mouse, so how hard could it be.
Nurse: Really? PLEASE!?!
Me: Sure.
Look around behind the computer cart, tracing the mouse cord back.... down... to a KVM switch. Push the button.
Me: Try it now.
Nurse: IT WORKS! YOU'RE A GENIUS!
Me: No... it's just something triggered the KVM... I mean Keyboard/Video/Mouse switch back here and so it was stuck on the other computer, not the one you needed. Call your IT team later and have them come up here and make sure everything is OK.
Nurse: Will do! Now, you're not in labor so we're going to pump you full of drugs and send you to a room to sleep. Hopefully we can keep the baby from coming for 2 weeks.
Their cunning plan worked for 2 days. Baby girl born a few weeks early, and now may be going home early as she's doing amazing.
But, I've learned to tell the wife: don't mention who I work for, it just causes me to work at 3 AM with no sleep on computer systems I'm not likely to be able to do anything with.
