I take the opportunity to do some cable management and get everything set back up then go back to my office.

Domain controllers.......Ok

Exchange.......Ok

NAS.......Ok

Phones.......Ok

phew

I start to relax and Jeff walks in and tosses a box of RAM and HDD's on my desk.

Jeff: Can you go back to the other office and finish up on the laptops? We're ok here for now

Me: Sure thing.

Jeff: When you get back I'm going to have Chris shadow you. I'd like you to show him all the ins and outs of our environment.

Me: Do I need to pack up my stuff when I get back, too?

Jeff: No, nothing like that. We just want him to learn how to manage the other branch

Me: mmk

I grab the box of parts and head over to the other branch. After 5 minutes I had a guest badge and after another 2 minutes I was sitting in the storage room. I didn't mind being here, the building was nice and the people were great to talk to and most importantly I could do work. Since I didn't have to do any soldering I put in my headphones and started repairing the remaining laptops. When I was done it was lunch time, I grabbed lunch and headed back to my office. Chris was sitting in reception waiting for me

Steph: Hey Pavix, that's Chris. Jeff said you were expecting him.

Me: Hey Chris, I'm having my lunch but if you wanted to go get your lunch and come back in 30 we can get started

Chris: I'll just wait, if that's ok.

Me: Come on back. You can sit in the break room and I can let you know when I'm done with my lunch

Chris: Thanks

I sat down and fired up ogame while chomping down on Caseys pizza. After 20 minutes of space destruction that only a browser based game can offer I checked my work email, empty. Then I checked the shared IS mailbox, that was empty as well. I poke my head out

Me: Chris, you ready?

Chris: Yes

Me: Ok, grab a chair and come on in

I spend the day going over the domain controllers, exchange server, SCCM Server, how the network is configured. He was a good guy, and sharp as a tack. He took notes, didn't screw around and he actually understood how things worked. We were walking through the server room and I decided to do a little recon

Me: So how long have you been with the company?

Chris: A few months now

Me: What have you been doing so far?

Chris: Fixing laptops, but I'm not so great with hardware things

Me: Tell you what, I'll see if I can get my hands on some laptops that need repair and I'll help you

Chris: Thank you! Do you know what the company does here?

Me: You too, huh?

Chris: What?

Me: Nothing. They do a variety of web hosting

Chris: Why wouldn't they just tell me that?

Me: Probably because they're using consumer grade hardware, office space as a data center, oversell like crazy and are trying to stay anonymous for either legal reasons or so their customers don't come beat someone up if they get ripped off. I don't know, to be perfectly honest. And I think if I don't find out I'll sleep better at night

Chris: Fair enough.
