So I've been cruising the hardware swap subreddit and I managed to grab a ducky 2 for work. Last night it arrived and I was extremely excited to get it to work and begin using it. So this morning rolls around and I bring it in and plug it in and....Nothing. No lights. No popups from Windows. Nada.
So I think it must be that my normal account doesn't have admin rights and reboot my workstation, still dead. Hmmm, I wonder if the port was dead. It worked for my company issued ergo keyboard but maybe it just gave up the ghost at a bad time. So I plug in my old ergo keyboard and it works just fine. Hmm
So I plug the ducky back in and log in to my admin account, no prompts for hardware. I check Device Manager and don't see any listing for it at all in either Keyboards, Human Interface devices or under USB and nothing listed in Unknown devices. This should be the point where I figure out what's wrong, but I don't. I then check our SEP logs because in our environment we lock down USB so you can't use non-approved USB drives, but nothing in the SEP logs about blocking a USB connected device.
So I sat staring at my new purchase wondering if I got a bum keyboard. Then I remember seeing dip switches, having never owned a Ducky keyboard before I had no clue what they did so I googled it. It appears they don't actually do anything other than disable certain keys on the keyboard. FSCK. Hmm, I wonder if it has an on/off switch...I know, why in the hell would a keyboard have an on/off switch. But I was stretching....So I turned the keyboard over again and looked, not finding any other switches BUT, I did find the USB cable not securely seated.
For those of you who never owned a ducky, There is 2 sides of the cable, one that plugs into the computer, and The USB 5/p that plugs into the keyboard.
I reseat the cable, reboot my computer and I am back in business!
