Enjoying it so far! Question about "ability scores"

I'm playing with my friend 2 evenings per week, and we are at chapter 6 if I'm not mistaken. The game is so fun! We enjoy the exploration the most, followed by combat almost as much.
I've a question about some combat cards. How's the ability point counted? Do we take account the "Skills" also? Some diplomacy cards says ⬆️ for each empathy. If I have 2 points and 2 skills, do I go up ⬆️⬆️ or ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️?
