Damage mechanic for my RPG
Post Body

I am not a big fan of the abstraction of "hit points" in my RPG's, so I'm trying to work on a different system that fits in with the narrative style of my game. I'd like to run my initial thoughts by the group and see what you think.

[Note: there is some inspiration drawn from Numenera and Blades in the Dark for this particular aspects, but I'm trying to craft something new because there are different mechanics in my game that those systems don't use].

Much of my game relies on point pools that effect different aspects of play. These are Command, Reputation, and Stamina (which constitute the 3 Fatigue pools); Wits (which guides your awareness in various ways); and Potency (which is part of the magic system). The way that I'm conceptualizing my damage system is that it affects these areas of the game rather than a lump of hit points.

So injuries would work in the following way:

Physical damage

This would affect your Stamina pool and increase the cost of using these points to overcome various physical checks.

Brain damage (Not quite the name I want, but it's the working title so far)

This would affect your Command and Potency as your ability to cast magic and perform mental tasks becomes harder.

Nerve damage

This would affect both your Wits and your Reputation as loss of control or other nerve-related injury would affect visual appeal or other motor skills.

When injured, players would be able to choose how their character is affected in a particular situation. There are 6 levels to each type of damage. Once you've reached the highest level in two of them, you're incapacitated and have to be treated for trauma.

My game works on a general concept that death is not common but it is permanent and permanent injuries can occur. I am trying to use this sort of system to spread injuries out over a few areas of the character rather than simply saying "you take 20 hit points of damage" without it really working with the thematic flow of the game.

Does this seem like a workable system? Would names for each level in all three groups be distracting?
