I'm rattling around the idea of "cultural tags" to my character creation process that would allow players to choose races from a particular culture but have some variety based on the tags they choose for their character.

For example, Culture A has the following tags: Nomad, Pastoral, Warrior. Each of these would give a benefit. Player X and Player Y both decide to be from this same culture but want to have a bit of difference between them. One of them takes the Nomad and Pastoral tags, and other takes Nomad and Warrior tags.

The general idea I have for the tags is that they would be similar (in concept) to D&D 5e backgrounds in that they grant a few skill benefits, perhaps a unique feature, and maybe some idea of initial equipment and such. That's only very loose at this point, though.

My question to you fine folks is this: does this seem like a unique and interesting approach to character creation? What would be some pitfalls you'd see with such a system? Thanks again for your thoughts. You folks are always great.
