I was just offered a promotion at work from a Sys Admin to Sr Sys Admin, with the caveat that instead of working my normal day shift (M-F, 8-4), I'd be working 8 PM-8 AM, staggered days (So, on a two week rotation, Sun-Tues, Friday-Saturday one week, Wed-Thurs the next). Also, I work for a hosting company, so the volume of work for a Sr Sys Admin is pretty high compared to a regular sys admin (I'd go as far to say that the volume of daily work is around 1.5 -2x of a regular sys admin on a normal day). The pay raise isn't anything to sniff at, currently my base would stay the same and I'd be eligible for a bonus of 25% of what I currently make (which, is team based, and they average hitting 90-95%, so practically, its a 22-24% raise, depending on the quarter)
So, while I'm very happy about the potential pay bump, I'm pretty meh about moving to night shift and, while I'm not lazy, I'm not looking forward to a much higher volume of work.
So, my questions for the overnighters is this:
A) How bad is the transition from day to night?
B) How is your sleep schedule on your off days?
C) How does it affect your time with your family/friends/etc
Thanks!
