We have a bunch of Dell Precision r7920's and are looking for more since they're still available and run about 1/3 the price of the r7960's for comparable specs. They come with this 'Dell Ultra-Speed Drive Boot' PCIe NVMe card that in the past we just removed for 2 reasons.
- Our old RHEL kickstart was hard coded to sda (has since been fixed)
- From time to time we have a need to remove a HDD either to clone it, copy it or sometimes it's just easier to move a HDD to another server then reconfigure other things.
My problem is this, I was just forwarded an email from a Dell rep saying that both the r7920 & r7960 (possibly new revision?) on the web site today will ONLY boot from that internal card and that won't work for us.
I was wondering if anyone has purchased any recently and has first hand experience, is there a setting that can be changed in BIOS and the rep either doesn't know or is reading verbatim form the default configuration or did Dell really change something in these boxes?? I tried looking at the r7920 online manual BIOS options and I didn't see anything that looked like a switch or toggle related to an internal or PCIe device. Any help appreciated.
