DS3612xs, upgrade completed.
Post Body

Hello all!

Just thought i'd provide an update on:

https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/ayozhy/looking_to_purchase_and_upgrade_a_ds3611xs/

I sourced a DS3612xs, for cheap (it was <500 euro in the end) and Upgraded the RAM (32GB) and CPU (E3-1240)

and I managed to find an active cooler to replace the standard HS:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/alpenfohn-ben-nevis-cpu-cooler-120mm-hs-048-al.html

apart from some modificaiton to the rubber support, it's a drop in replacement that doesn't cause issues due to size, didn't even need to remove the motherboard, the threads on the screws were a match. I applied a thin layer of arctic silver 5 (that takes me back to my old overclocking days!) and it went on without any issues

also a nice point, the CPU FAN 4 pin header works straight away, fan spins up. That should keep the CPU cool.

I came across many older posts regarding the upgrade path for the 3611/3612 and wanted to update that it's possible, as well as worth while.
