Question regarding KotFE and Companion Conversations

So I've been going by this guide to make sure I don't miss any story content. I'm a bit confused by what it means when it says I have to complete companion conversations BEFORE starting KotFE. Does this only mean that I have to make sure I engage in the ones that are available at that moment (e.g., ones for which there's an icon in my ship)? Or do I need to try to do all the possible companion conversations before KotFE?
I just want to make sure I don't miss anything, companion or otherwise. Thanks for the clarification!
