Total chlorine lower than free chlorine
Post Body

I'm a newish pool owner with a 7500 gallon inground pool. We had some torrential rains a few weeks ago and I was having some small patches of algae so I shocked the pool twice, most recently on Tuesday with dichlor. I was using test strips before but my Taylor k2005 test kit arrived today and the readings are:

  • Free Chlorine 5
  • Total Chlorine 2
  • pH 7.4
  • Total Alkalinity 100
  • CYA 80
  • Calcium Hardness 275

I'm not understanding how the free chlorine is higher than my total chlorine and how to calculate combined chlorine based in these results. I've checked it three times today and still getting the same results. Am I doing something wrong, is my kit defective, or is there something else happening?
