Where would you recommend a young-ish professional who's looking to be as close to the centre of things as possible live?

Per title, I'm going to be working in the university soon, hoping to get a one bedroom place as close to the centre as possible, but might not be able to come down for viewings as I'm moving from Birmingham. Any thoughts? I know the Marina comes highly recommended and I'm going to consider it, but it seems a bit too pricey so far. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help!
