Are there any stories of something in the real world changing drastically while the castaways were gone?

I remember on the show Lost, a character on the island joked around that the Boston Red Sox will "never win the World Series" and the irony of them missing out on that happening while being away.
I'm sure it's more difficult with survivor only being around 45 to 50 days away, but are there any stories of a castaway getting back home and something has changed completely? (either serious or trivial)
The closest I can think of is Adam's mother; which I'm happy he was able to see her right before she passed.
