Uncomfortable with the level of racism in earlier seasons

Post Body

I'm new to watching Surivvor and I've been binge-watching the seasons recently, skipping a few here and there. At the moment I'm on the second episode of Samoa and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed a stark amount of really nasty racist comments made by the contestants that make the viewing experience a bit uncomfortable.

The most appalling example of this is the episode of Samoa I just watched where Bob tells Yasmine (a black woman) to go back to eating ketchup sandwiches and Kool-aid. I get that the show is old but it still shocks me that someone like that would even get cast in the first place and the edit seems to find little to no sensitivity when dealing with comments like that.

Another moment that really rubbed me the wrong way was in Gabon when Randy (who very unreasonably) hates Crystal and says that she and GC (the only other black contestant) ran their former tribe like a "gang". This was completely unsupported by the edit and seemed to have been said to spite Crystal because he hated her for no reason other than her being a black woman.

There are also plenty of uncomfortable sexist moments, but these have been talked about to death, so I won't talk too much about that. I'm not trying to say that these contestants should've been kicked off the show or anything, but I also think it's very valid for comments like these to harm the viewing experience of earlier seasons. I loved Gabon but definitely felt like the edit might've left out a lot more of Randy's racist moments (the other contestants routinely call him a bigot for a reason surely).

Anyway, this is just my rant and food for thought, I hope the newer seasons are more sensitive and racially diverse when it comes to these things.

P.S. I'm very new to watching Survivor so it would be nice if anyone who comments on this could not make reference to any boot order or placement/winner of any season thank you.
