Post Body

The main artifact (a stone carved bull rhyton, a vase made for pouring wine, usually during a ritual) was found in the palace of Knossos, where legend says the labyrinth of the Minotaur was built. The “Minotaur” in the bottom corner is actually Pablo Picasso at the beach, from a photograph by Gjon Mili. Picasso did many pieces inspired by bulls and was said to have “glimpsed his truest nature” in the Minotaur.

I started working on this painting quite a while ago, and as I was working on it, ended up having to work my way through my own labyrinth of sorts. In the myth, Daedalus left behind a thread to be able to get out of the maze he created. Like so many things in life, I didn’t have a manual to help me through my struggle, and that’s where the title comes from.
