I’ve never heard of seals attacking people, but they can get pretty intimidating out there, and I know that I’m completely fucked if the seal decides to reclaim its territory.
I surf around Monterey, which is lower population, so the breaks are rarely crowded and sometimes I’m out there alone. If a seal is giving me the stink eye when I’m alone, I just go back in and see if the seal leaves, but I feel safer if there’s at least a small crowd. But today this large seal (maybe sea lion?) was popping out, raising its neck up, and making some noises at this other guy out there, and this mother fucker thought the seal was just being cute. The seal eventually left, but I was pretty close to leaving. It felt like it was trying to intimidate us.
