What is Superman / Clark up to? (Theories)

So, again, I find the lack of a little thought infuriating. At several points this season, Kara has faced world-ending threats, been severely injured, and still, barely a mention of an equally powerful superhero who can come and help her.

This is similar to the issue that's always been prevalent in a shared universe: Why doesn't a hero call for backup? Why doesn't Spiderman just call Thor? Why doesn't Batman call the the league more?

So, rather than just kvetch and moan, I'd like to brainstorm possible plothole fillers (because that's a lot more fun, anyway)

1) Clark still doesn't agree with Kara working for the government. He still is an independent hero, and will always assist in any fight. But aside from his scientist friends at STAR labs and the Metropolis SCU, he doesn't really interact with government officials that much. He prefers it that way. He's a regular guy who just wants to help. As there is no Justice League in this universe, he doesn't have access to government information streams regularly. He doesn't know about the triple-secret DEO activities without breaking into government computers via the Fortress, which he is loath to do.

I like this, as it sets up a nice dynamic when (hopefully not just if) he makes a reappearance: Kara didn't tell Clark she was injured. Clark resents that, and it causes tension / a rift between them.

2) He's off world saving lives from some advanced society. We've already established he has advanced technology in the fortress from the 28 known galaxies. I like the idea that since he trusts Kara so much to protect earth, he feels like he can assist in galactic distress calls. This helps explain why he doesn't show up for large swaths of time. It also sets up intersting story ideas: As Kara is the more galactically worldly of the two, she has more experience traveling the universe. Again, some story ideas about conflict that would give opportunities to get Superman back on the show.

3) He's starting a family with Lois. I like this idea. Maybe there was a quiet wedding that Clark couldn't invite the DEO to. Kara and Alex slipped out, and now he's trying to balance being a family man and a superhero.

Any other ideas?
