How do I cs better as a mage?

I've noticed that I cs worse when I play mages than with ad champs. I feel like the timing for hitting my auto attack with it's not fantastic damage is really tight, and I can't always use my abilities to finish them off, cause then I run out of mana really quick. This mostly has to do with early game, since late game I can use abilities indiscriminately with ludens/archangel staff etc. Is it just something I'll get used to, or are there any specific tips or tricks anyone can offer.
