I just came back to League after nearly ten years. I'm playing mid mostly, and especially when it comes to Swain games, I frequently have the lowest gold and damage.

I don't usually lose lane incredibly hard (sometimes, but not most games), and in teamfights I'm CCing and ulting when I can, but I still seem to never get close to a carry.

In my last game, I was Swain v. Tristana mid. My Trist pushed and roamed, my bot ignored my pings and proceeded to let trist snowball. From there, I kept trying to keep the map in mind, push my lane when Trist is gone, and keep CSing. As the game went on, my Support kept telling me I'm useless and not doing anything, when we're getting dived on by a fed Trist and I'm choosing to not let her snowball more.

I think this same issue goes for most of my matches. I don't want to engage if I know I can't win, so why would I give the enemy another kill? Shouldn't I be trying to maintain gold and not feed? I'm currently in Bronze so I know that basically nothing matters here.
