As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a preference for more fantastical and unrealistic settings. I’m a big fan of storytelling through video games, fantasy podcasts, and tabletop games if that gives better perspective; a real bonafide nerd, who favors good world-building and character driven plots above all else.
With that introduction - recently I have been wanting to branch out into new genres, namely fiction, to try a taste of something new for once. I don’t typically know the authors my friends recommend when we talk, and as fiction is also my sister’s favorite genre, I’d like to give it a shot and have something to connect on and share together. I just have no idea where to start. A few of my favorite authors for examples are Terry Pratchett, Katherine Addison, Jonathan L. Howard, Tamsyn Muir, Emily Tesh, and Ursula K. Le Guin. I love their style, prose and humor (often dark).
Please give me any and all suggestions you have! I’m open to trying pretty much anything (save for romance, unless it’s a little bit gay maybe). Horror and thriller/mysteries welcome. Thanks in advance.
