Suggest me a book to add to my anti-depression reading queue

Post Body

For the past 2 years, I've used Audible as a way to get through the day-to-day depression I have. I listen about 30-40 hours a week and most of the time at work when I can. When I started I hadn't read too much, so it was really easy to look for suggestions here or on r/printsf. Since Monday I've listened to the first few hours of several books and couldn't get into them, and my queue is basically empty. I would love some advice based on the books I loved during my pandemic reads. I am feeling super stuck.

Books I love:

  • Library at Mount Char - A mysterious book that you can't really group as a thriller or mystery. I don't love the dark and gruesome but this book surprised and delighted me. Pacing was great - fast.
  • Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - I couldn't get into IQ84, but this was my jam. Lots of atmosphere while being pretty much in the dark about what's going on. Building to this moment where it wraps up nicely -- without direct answers but enough to think about. Slower paced but I never felt bored.
  • Piranesi - The theme of "not really knowing what's going on" and it becomes clear comes up again. This time, it becomes very concrete -- what's happening --- and it's rewarding.
  • Lots of Sci-fi or Sci-fi adjacent. This is How You Lose the Time War, Project Hail Mary, Recursion, Hyperion. One reason I like these is that they are all pretty fast-paced and use an economy of words to tell great stories.

Books I DNF or just didn't vibe with at all:

  • The Expanse series. I listened to 5 of them hoping for more. The pace was entirely too slow for me and I never felt a good pay off or any connection to the characters.

  • The Fifth Season - It took me 3 or 4 tried to get through this. I loved the twist, and the way the narrative structure was handled but the story itself wasn't compelling or interesting to me.

  • Disapora by Greg Egan. I love hard sci-fi and this one was recommended as the best of the best but it required a ton of work to keep up and honestly I was lost and confused through most of it. Also, since I'm listening to these, the narrator needs to be good and dense books aren't great to listen to.

  • The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet - I tried a few times, the story never hooked me and the characterization took way too much time for my brain.

I'm genre agnostic. Would love any suggestions, hopefully I've given enough context to get a sense of what I enjoy and why.

Thanks so much!
