A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with depression. Although I've been working to manage it, following a recent major event, these past couple of months have been exceptionally difficult.
It's New Year's Eve and one of my personal resolutions is to engage in healthier habits and rekindle my love for the world. One of my favorite things about the little planet we live in is that we can instantly transport into another universe or learn about nearly any subject with the flip of a page. Another of my favorite things is how good finishing a good book can make you feel. :)
As many of you already know, depression makes it really challenging to appreciate the world around you.
I'd really like to fall in love with the world again and rekindling my love for reading is a great way to get there. So, I'm looking for some book recommendations! Since I don't know specifically what I'm searching for, here are a few ideas. :)
Things I'm looking for:
- really heartwarming stuff
- books where people do the right thing
- feel-good books
- page-turners!
- plots where the main characters are dealing with mental health, but in a positive way
- self-help books
- spooky things are cool (think: Gaiman's The Graveyard), as long as there's no [TW]: suicide, sense of being trapped by a mental illness/apparent mental illness
Things I'm not looking for:
- plots that glorify mental illness
- books involving infidelity
- teenagers, ugh (jk, LOL, but these do make me feel old)
- fantasies (sorry, my brain is just not built for these :( ) (I appreciate them, though)
- very dense books
Note that these are not exclusive deal-breakers or deal-makers! Just some ideas.
Cheers, and Happy New Year! :)
