Question about a book option for an 8th grader during winter break

I have a step daughter that will be going to winter break this week. I want her to partake in reading a book to distract her from electronic devices and also learn something interesting. I also want to help her with her writing skills so I figure reading a book will increase her vernacular and familiarize the different writing styles. Any book recommendations for this winter break? I will also incentivize her monetarily if she gives a response on what she learned. Debating on having her write an essay for an additional incentive. I asked her what she wants to read and she said it doesn’t matter. Her interest seem to be animals.
