Good but not gripping

My wife likes to read before bed, but she finds books that are too intriguing, mysterious, or action packed mean that she then struggles to switch off.

Iā€™d like to get her some books that fit this bill for Christmas, but I could use some suggestions.

Examples that seem to have worked:

Moby Dick North and South The Nix (although this was almost too good for her to not want to keep reading) The Forsyte Saga Finding Gobi

She generally likes Victorian novels, but not modern replicas (hated the Essex Serpent for example)
