A book about a bodyguard or protector that goes above and beyond

I can't put my finger on where the, I guess trope, came to mind for me from but I keep thinking of a story where... The bodyguard or caretaker or someone who isn't a close relative of someone steps in to protect them from a gang or a crime they did in self defence.
Maybe kind of like The Equaliser, or the way a certain character helps out a girl in Hannibal when she has to kill in self defense. The only story I have read that kind of fits that bill is, Without Remorse from Tom Clancy.
