At one time, I had a dead bedroom and my wife and I were constantly at each other's throats (and not in the good way).
Like a lot of other guys, I started to sugar on the side. When I did, my platonic relationship improved. I was happier, and just stopped caring about all the stuff my wife would do.
She suspected I was seeing someone. There were definitely signs. But there was no smoking gun.
That was, until one day she was hanging up some shirts in the closet while I was in the bathroom and pulled a long brown hair from one of them.
"A brunette? I didn't picture you with a brunette."
I rolled my eyes, continued to burst my teeth. She put the hair in the toilet, flushed it, and went back to laundry.
About a month later, we were on our bi-weekly one-on-one date while the babysitter was watching the kids and my wife asked if we could update our documents so that if anything changed between us she could continue to put our kids first. She was a stay at home wife and a great mom, with lots of involvement with schools and the community and such.
I gladly did -- we updated our post-nuptial agreements, and once she had certainty that (1) she wouldn't end up in the gutter and (2) I thought highly of her as a mom, she was in a good place. A great place. Our post-nuptial agreement had her getting well more than half the joint liquid assets - well more than she would get in a straight divorce.
After that, our relationship just kept getting better and better. Even if we were only friends and co-parents and no longer lovers.
...
Now we are separated, and I'm in a great long-term relationship with my sugar girlfiend. Things are really good.
I thought I'd share that boring story because more often than not, the revelation that a spouse is having an affair just isn't that dramatic - by the time it reaches that stage there just isn't much romance left in the tank.
