I can't place a hatch on my alien containment.

I've just built a new alien containment unit and I can't place a hatch on it to be able to use it. It is in a single multi purpose room with just a hatch leading to the outside. The room has power via a couple of solar panels on the top.
I have the ingredients for the hatch but when I point my fabricator at the tank in any of the hatch positions it just highlights a red outline of the hatch and wont let me build it?
I am playing on stable in VR.
