2012 Outback 3.6R Limited — Navigation System questions and thoughts

Post Body

As the title says, I have a 2012 Outback 3.6R Limited. I bought her used in 2018 with a little over 40k miles on her and she’s gone from one end of the US to the other and halfway back again and has a shade over 90k miles. The last time I was here I asked about the legitimacy of towing a UHaul trailer down the Alaska Highway with the car since the official tow weight limit is 3,000 pounds. All-told, the trailer weight combined with my personal effects weighed in right at 2100 pounds and the car did great. The engine burned less than a quart of oil on the trip, averaged 18mpg when 25-26mpg is standard for her on the highway. I was pleased.

Now that I’m in Washington, I’m considering an upgrade to the navigation system. That old DVD technology feels almost analogue to me. It’s not intuitive, and, to be frank, I hate it. It’s literally the only thing I can’t stand about my car. What have those of you who have changed out or upgraded your systems done? I am a person who knows very little about switching this stuff out. The backup camera is out in the car and instead of figuring it out/paying the dealership, I’ve just lived without one.

I would appreciate any suggestions on what systems y’all have purchased, whether you’ve done the switching yourselves or where you’ve had it done. How much should I expect to pay, et cetera. I’d like to have the GPS and ability to control my phone through the car more easily than it currently does.

Thanks, everyone. Stay rad.
